Remembering a Maltese radio and TV legend

Description

Charles Arrigo was one of Malta’s best-known broadcasters.

His distinctive rich voice narrated the news, novels and dozens of national events and royal visits on radio and television in a career spanning nearly 60 years.

His career in broadcasting started in 1947 when he became the first Maltese male-announcer to be employed by the cable radio network, Rediffusion.

Considered one of the best broadcasters Malta ever produced, he is remembered for his professionalism and work ethic.

Mr Arrigo was was also a good actor, taking part in the television series Villa Sunset on TVM in 2000. He played the role of the Colonel in the series.

Many viewers will also remember him presenting the popular Sunday afternoon quiz, ‘Staqsini Għoxrin’.

Charles Arrigo was born on 6 April 1929 in Valletta and studied at the Lyceum and at Perugia University.

He attended a BBC production course as announcer and newscaster on the BBC World Service in 1959 and returned to the BBC for training on television in 1962. He was one of the pioneers of the Malta Television Service in that year.

He died at St Luke’s Hospital in 2006 after collapsing while at work at PBS in Gwardamangia.
