Archive film of one of Malta’s most popular beaches

Description

Summer in Malta means sun, sea and sand.

And it appears it has been that way for many decades, as this nostalgic footage from 1990 shows.

Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha, which feature in this archive video, remain among the most popular sandy beaches in the Maltese Islands to this day.

Both are located on the north-west coast of Malta, right next to each other and close to the tiny village of Manikata.

A wide stretch of golden sand gives Golden Bay its name and it attracts thousands of tourists and Maltese families every summer for swimming, snorkeling and BBQs.

If you examine maps created before 1960s, you’ll notice that Golden Bay used to be called Military Bay.

Right up until the early 1970s, the Royal Marines used the bay for training purposes with commandoes sometimes spotted landing on the beach during Cold War military exercises.

Ghajn Tuffieha Camp, used by the Royal Navy, British Army and the RAF at various stages of its life, was a stone’s throw away from the bay.

It now lies derelict and abandoned.
